After our “Back to School Giveaway”, we gained knowledge of other current donation needs in upper peninsula schools! Uptown will be partnering with DeepWater Church in gathering donations for PPE items, specifically- kids size (elementary age) disposable masks, hand sanitizer, sanitizing wipes and spray, paper towels and Kleenex. All donations must be new, and in their original packaging. You can drop off your physical donations in the covered bin outside of 106A Charlesfort Aly this Wednesday (August 26) through next Wednesday (September 2), or you can bring the items to church on Sunday. If you would prefer to donate financially, please click the link below. We look forward to serving our local schools together!

The "Back to School" season looks much different this year. The legitimate concerns and uncertainties surrounding the pandemic and its potential affects on the classroom have been felt by parents, teachers and students alike. With the spike in COVID-19 cases, the prospect of a normal school year is fading fast. That's why we would like to step in and take away at least a small amount of stress from families who are struggling to buy new school supplies this year. Whether their children will be attending school virtually or in person, our hope is that these new supplies will bring some much needed excitement and joy to the students regarding the start of the new school year. We will be collecting donations that are mostly focused on elementary/middle school students' needs over the next week and then distributing them (in accordance with social distancing protocols) in the Hampton Park Bandstand on Wednesday, August 12th from 5-7pm. Outreach Event Details:
This Sunday at 4PM, BYO sweet tea or other cold beverage and join us on the porch of 24 Water Street for an outdoor, family style worship gathering in our city's beautiful historic district.
We will be spacing out chairs in adherence with social distancing protocols. Masks are not required during the service as this is an outdoor gathering, but please wear a mask if going indoors to use the restroom (we will be providing extra masks if you don't have one). 24 Water Street is the furthest building on your right when entering the First Baptist Church parking lot from Meeting St. We will also be streaming the service on Facebook Live if you feel more comfortable joining virtually (see link below). Why do we need community? Because living in a community of believers challenges us to be more like Jesus. It is in the context of relationships that we are given the opportunity to be refined as followers of Christ and experience a joy that is compelling to the world.
Our public worship service is on the campus of the Citadel next to Hampton Park. Come hang out with us on a Sunday morning and we’d love to help you get connected to a community that will encourage you in your pursuit of Christ. If you’ve been at Uptown for any amount of time, you have probably noticed a pattern. Week to week there isn’t much guessing about what either Chris or I will be preaching the following Sunday. We don’t keep anyone in the dark in an attempt to be novel, creative, or shocking; in fact, we do our best to do just the opposite. So, if you’re wondering what next week’s sermon will cover, just read a little bit further on the page you read this week. But why do it that way? For your soulsPreaching through the Bible verse-by-verse, chapter-by-chapter exposes you to a variety of Scripture. There are parts of God’s Word that, otherwise, it’s unlikely you would ever read. Later this year we’ll spend the two Sundays before Advent in 2-3 John. How many people are familiar with these tiny books? Yet, most of us return to the Gospel penned by the same author year after year. It’s easy to do this with a topical approach to sermon series, too. We prefer to (mis)use a small number of passages and verses with which we’re familiar, rather than allowing the entire testimony of Scripture speak into our lives. It’s good for our souls to be searched by all of God’s Word. For our soulsPreaching through consecutive sections of the Bible also forces Chris and I to present the "whole counsel of God" to the folks whom God has given us to care for and lead. Tough passages can't be avoided, which means we aren't afforded the luxury of skipping topics we'd rather not touch. In this way, we allow the text itself to be topical rather than our preaching. This approach is good for our souls as pastors because it forces us to be faithful and honest to God and his Word, trusting that his Spirit will do the work of transforming lives through Sunday sermons rather than our creativity as communicators. We spend hours each week studying, writing, and preparing to deliver sermons that instill gospel truths unique to that book as we go - giving our souls a deeper understanding of each book and growing us in our love for God and his Word as we serve his Church.
Have you heard about our new “First 5 Process”?
Finding a church family to call home can be a difficult and, sometimes, an awkward process. The Uptown team has designed these “First Five” steps we can take together as you get to know us and we get to know you. Stick around with us for 5 weeks, taking one new step a week, and we believe that will help you to see a full picture of what we are all about! Afterwards, if you decide that Uptown isn't the church for you, we’d love to help connect you to one of our partner churches around Charleston. Tap the image above to learn more! For our first ever co-ed/family Life on Life event, we will be holding a potluck at the First Baptist Beach House on Folly Beach! Bring a covered dish and some beach attire if you'd like to take advantage of the convenient, front beach location!
This event will take place on Sunday, August 25th from 5-8PM @ 1017 West Ashley Avenue Have you signed up for our newsletter? Once a month, we send out an email containing the latest news and upcoming events at Uptown. If you’d like to stay up to date, just click the link below to sign up!
